The founder of clan MacDhughaill (MacDougall) was Dugall, eldest son of Somerled who claimed descent from both Harold Hardrada, King of Norway, and Fergus mor mhic, King of Dalriada. Somerled's youngest son was the founder of the MacDonald clan. The MacDougalls made their home near Oban and in Moidart. It is thought that the Moidart MacDougalls are related to the MacDonald clan.
