Kintail is a rugged area in the North West Highlands of Scotland.
Although Kintail is one of the country's last great wildernesses, the area
is easily reached from the main centres of Scotland. It is about
a four hour drive from both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Kintail offers
all kinds of activities and services. It is an ideal location to
enjoy Gaelic culture, angling, sea fishing, watersports, sea trips, mountaineering,
botany, geology, local crafts, freshly prepared local food and Scotland's
national drink, an unrivaled variety of Scottish wildlife, and the friendly
local people of Kintail.
Attractions are numerous, with historic Eilean Donan Castle only six miles
from Shiel Bridge. It was first built in 1214 as a defence against
the Vikings, later destroyed in the Jacobite times during the Battle of
Glenshiel and rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th centaury as a family
home. Great places for walking include the Five Sisters of Kintail
(Sgurr na Moraich, Saighead, Fhuaran (or Ouran), Carnach and Ciste Duibhe.)
and the Cluanie Ridges.
