Dunstaffnage Castle
Built around 1250, the impressive site of Dunstaffnage Castle sits on
what were once the principle sea lanes of the Western Highlands.
It was built by Duncan or Ewan MacDougall, and was taken by Robert the
Bruce in 1309 who passed it to Campbell ownership. For the next 200
years it had various owners until returning to the Campbells who retained
ownership until 1958 when it was passed to Historic Scotland. The
only remaining inhabitated part of the castle is the gate-house which was
built in the 15th century and was restored in 1903. Inside the gate-house is a
display on the various castles within Argyll and Bute.
Flora MacDonald, who helped Prince Charles Edward Stewart to escape
after the Jacobite Uprising in 1745/46, was imprisoned in the castle in
1746. The castle is said to be haunted by a ghost in a green
dress who appears when some significant event is about to happen to the Campbells.
