Instructions: 1. The pumpkin pinata picture can be found above. The mouth, eye and eye accent pieces, eyebrow, nose and leaf can be found above. 2. Cover a flat work surface with several thicknesses of newspaper. 3. Tear several more newspapers into approximately 2 inch strips of varying length. Tear rather than cut the strips. Torn edges blend easier and add strength when covering the pinata. 4. Inflate the balloon to approximately a 12 inch diameter and knot with thread. To prevent the balloon from moving, suspend it or place on a towel with knotted end at top center. 5. Use a marker to draw a 3 inch square on the back of the balloon 2 inches below the knot for the opening to insert candy and favors. 6. In a large container, mix a paste with two cups of flour and four cups of water. Mix well. 7. To cover the balloon, dip the strips in the paste, one at a time. Wipe off excess before applying to balloon. 8. Apply four layers of paper strips, beginning with a horizontal layer, then a vertical layer. Repeat. 9. Leave the 3 inch square at the back unlayered. 10. Wrap the knotted end with strips to make a 3 inch stem. Let dry thoroughly. 11. When dry, deflate the balloon with a pin. Remove balloon pieces and carefully trim around the back opening. 12. To make a harness for the pinata, tie a length of twine each way around the widest part of the pinata with cords intersecting at center bottom and top to one side of the stem and the opening. 13. Use masking tape to secure the harness. Leave a large loop of twine at the top to hang the pinata and later attach a rope if desired. 14.To cover the pinata, fold each sheet of orange tissue paper crosswise. Cut 3 inch strips the length of the paper. 15. Fold each strip in half lengthwise. Use the scissors to fringe the folded edge by cutting 1/4 inch vertical cuts to within 1/2 inch of the straight edge. Several sheets may be folded and cut at the same time. 16. Unfold and refold lengthwise with opposite sides together - do not crease fold. Use the glue stick to glue the straight edges together, dabbing glue 2 - 3 inch intervals. 17. Repeat to make a green fringed tissue strip for the stem. 18. To make the pumpkin, brush rubber cement on the stem end and wrap with green tissue strip. 19. Beginning at top of pinata, apply rubber cement to a small area at a time. cover with horizontal orange strips, overlapping each one. Save enough strips to cover the opening after inserting candy. Place pinata in large bowl or suspend it for ease in covering. 20. Trace the Jack-o-lantern patterns and cut from appropriate paper. 21. Also cut two 1 1/4 inch yellow circles for cheeks. 22. Use a craft knife to cut out veins on green leaves. 23. Glue green leaf on top of brown leaf. Repeat for second leaf. Glue leaves to pumpkin stem. 24. Glue yellow section of mouth, eyes and eye accents over matching brown sections. Refer to the photo to glue face to front of pumpkin. 25. Curl varying lengths of curling ribbon over the blade of the scissors. Glue shorter ones to stem and longer ones to the base of the pumpkin. |
