PAPER MACHE HALLOWEEN MASK

You will need:
newspaper
paper towels
hole punch
black, white and red tempera paint
ice cream or yogurt container
1 balloon
large and small paint brush
glass jar
bowls
scissors
glue gun
yarn for hair
string

Instructions:
1. Cut strips of newspaper  inch wide.
2. Blow up the balloon to the desired size for your mask. Tie off and set aside.
3. Combine the glue and water (half and half) to make your paste for sticking the newspaper to the balloon.
4. Completely submerge the newspaper into the paste and squeeze off some of the excess paste.
5. Lay the strip of newspaper on the balloon covering the balloon entirely.  Leave a big enough space to stick your hand in at the bottom of the balloon. This will also be the opening for displaying the scary mask on a pole, etc.
6. Cover the balloon in 2 complete layers of newspaper and sit the balloon in a bowl.
7. Cut a number of short strips to create the nose. Set aside.
8. Dip a long strip of newspaper in the paste and coat it well. Don’t squeeze off the excess this time. Wrap the strip loosely around the index finger of your hand. Place your finger on the balloon where you want the nose to go. Leave your finger in the paper and with your other hand, dip short strips of newspaper in the paste and lay it over the piece of newspaper already on your finger. Cover with three or four more short pieces of newspaper dipped in paste. Pull your finger slightly out of the tube of newspaper wrapped around your finger. Pinch the top of the piece of newspaper and along the bridge of the nose. Lay one short strip on each side of the nose to even things out. Holding onto the nose with one hand, pull your finger out slowly so you don’t damage the shape of the nose. Fold the ends of the nose under into the opening from which you removed your finger.
9. For the mouth, cut a strip 1 inch wide and the length of a newspaper page. Cut the strip in half.  Put one half aside. Cut one half in half. Cut these halves in half again. Each half will be one side of the top lip. Set aside the remaining halves for the bottom lip.  Dip one short piece in the paste and lay it on the balloon. shape where you want the mouth to go.  Don’t lay the piece of newspaper down flat because you will need to shape it to look like a mouth.  Mold each short piece after you’ve applied it to the balloon shape by pinching it or pulling it up to form a thin point that will be each side of the lip. Overlap the two halves of the top lip. After you apply and shape the top lip, cut a four inch piece from the strip you put aside earlier, dip it in the paste, squeeze off the excess and apply it to the top lip over the two short pieces to even them out. Repeat the process for the bottom lip. When you are shaping the lips, make sure the corners of the mouth meet.
10. Let your balloon shape dry overnight.
11. Paint the surface grey (mix black and white) as this will be the base coat for the face.
12. Let dry.
13. You can add a second coat if there is any newspaper showing through.
14. Wash out the brush you used for gray paint.  Pat the brush dry with paper towel.
15. For the features, pour a small amount of black paint in a small yogurt container. Start at the top with the scar. Using your small brush, paint a black line off to one side of the head and paint little black lines across it to resemble stitches. Paint another scar on the left hand side of the face, on the cheek area. If you need more paint, add a little more black paint to the container. Paint eyes on the face below the scar then wash out your brush and fill the jar with clean water again. Dry off the brush by blotting it with paper towel. Paint a streak of blood below each scar; paint the lips red and some blood dripping from one corner of the mouth.
16. Sit the balloon shape in a bowl to dry, not letting any of the features touch the bowl.
17. Pop the balloon and take it out.
18. If you are making a mask to wear, you need to cut all the way around the middle of the balloon shape, starting from the opening at the bottom and working your way around to the other side. You should have half of the newspaper balloon shape in you hands.
19. Take some yarn and undo the strands for hair.
20. Squeeze a drop of hot glue at the top of the mask and press the hair into it leaving some hanging on each side. Arrange the hair so it frames the mask but don’t glue the sides of hair to the mask because you will lose the wild, flowing look. Let dry completely before wearing.
21. Use a hole punch or a pair of scissors to make a hole in the middle of each side of the mask. Cut and tie a strong piece of string or wool to each hole with a knot.
