| You will need: 2 white standard size pillowcases glitter paints in pink and purple fabric dyes in pastel green,fuchsia and purple paintbrushes - flat scrubbers #1 & #6 (for fabric) disposable palette thin sponges for painting fabric glue fabric sizing black felt-tip water soluble marking pen heavy corrugated cardboard to fit inside pillow case tracing paper, scissors, spray bottle, iron, press cloth |

Instructions: 1. The Indian Maiden costume pattern can be found above. 2. The Indian Maiden costume picture can be found above. 3. Wash and dry the pillowcases and iron if necessary. 4. Refer to the "step 1" instructions on the pattern page and cut the neck opening out of the short folded end of the pillowcase, cutting through both layers of fabric. Cut only one pillowcase for the Indian costume. 5. To cut an armhole on each long folded edge of the pillowcase, begin at the short folded edge and cut a 7 inch slit down the side. 6. Turn all openings under 1/2 inch and fuse with fabric glue. Let dry thoroughly. 7. Using the black felt marker, trace the patterns in the pattern section onto tracing paper. 8. Place cardboard between layers of pillowcase. 9. Cut 5 inch slits, 1 inch apart, around bottom edge of pillowcase. 10. From the second pillowcase, cut four 3 1/2 x 14 inch strips. Cut 3 inch slits, 1/2 inch apart, along the length of each strip. Using fabric glue, glue the uncut edge of a strip around the inside edge of each armhole. 11. Fill the spray bottle with equal parts of fabric sizing and water. Add 1/4 to 1/2 of the bottle with pastel green dye and mix well. 12. Spray the remaining two strips and let dry. 13. Press the straight edge under 1/2 inch along each strip and glue to the front of the pillowcase from the edge of the neck opening to the center front. 14. Using scissors, cut painting sponge shapes as indicated on the patterns. To add the designs to the the pillowcase, refer to the design placement guide on the pattern. 15. Slightly dampen one #3 sponge and brush fuchsia onto one side. Beginning with the narrow end, press onto pillowcase 7 1/2 inches above the bottom edge. Repeat to add all fuchsia #3 design areas around pillowcase, reloading sponge with paint as needed. 16. Paint one #2 sponge with fuchsia and apply at narrow end of #3 areas. 17. Brush remaining #3 sponge with purple and apply around pillowcase with narrow end pointing up and base centered over two fuchsia. 18. Use the remaining #2 sponge to apply to narrow end of each area. 19. Using glitter paint, outline purple areas with purple and fuchsia areas with pink. 20. Using #1 sponges, add purple design at neckline and around bottom of #3 fuchsia areas. 21. Add pastel green around top of #3 purple areas. 22. Fill the spray bottle with equal parts fabric sizing and water and lightly mist the painted pillowcase. Turn inside out and press using a warm iron and pressing cloth. 23. Do not wash for several days. |
