INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING DOLLS OF THE WORLD BODY

Equipment:
Tracing paper
Pencil
Ruler
Scissors
Dressmaker's carbon,
Straight pins
Sewing and embroidery needles

Materials:
1. Fabric: pink cotton, 1/4 yard 36" wide for two dolls and assorted colors (given in individual directions).
2. Sewing thread to match all fabrics sewn.  Six-strand embroidery floss for features: brown, red, bright pink,
blue or green.
3. Knitting worsted for hair, about 1/2 oz. for each; red, yellow, gold or brown.
4. Red crayon for rouging cheeks (optional).
5. Cotton batting for stuffing.
6. All-purpose glue.
Additional materials are given in individual directions for each doll.

General directions:
 1. Trace patterns for dolls.
 2. Complete half and quarter patterns indicated by long dash lines.
 3. When cutting out the body and garment pieces out of fabric, add 3/8" for seam allowance on all edges, unless otherwise indicated.  Do not add seam allowances on any felt pieces.
 4. Cut two head-torso pieces and four separate leg pieces of pink cotton for each doll.
 5. Using carbon paper, transfer features to one head.
 6. Using two strands of floss in needle, embroider features.
 7. Use outline stitch with brown floss for outlines of eyes, eyelashes and eyebrows.
 8. Make noses and mouths in outline stitch with pink floss (unless otherwise indicated).
 9. Work eyes in satin stitch with either green, blue or brown floss (see individual directions). Shading on pattern indicates directions of satin stitches.
10. Rouge cheeks with crayon (optional).
11. Place two head-torsos together, right sides facing, and sew together with pink thread, leaving bottom edges open.
12. Sew two leg pieces together for each leg, right sides facing, leaving top edges open.  Clip curves.
13. Turn all pieces to right side and stuff.
14. Insert tops of legs in bottom of torso; turn bottom edges of torso in 3/8" and sew across the bottom, securing legs in place at the same time.
15. Make hair, clothes, shoes; finish dolls according to individual instructions.
Use matching sewing thread.  Hems, unless otherwise indicated, are very narrow; when cutting fabric add 3/8" hem allowance.
