INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING NURSERY RHYME DOLLS' BODY

EQUIPMENT:
1. Paper for patterns
2. Pencil
3. Ruler
4. Scissors
5. Dressmaker's carbon
6. Straight pins
7. Sewing and embroidery needles

MATERIALS
1. Fabric: pink cotton, 1/3 yd., 36" wide for two dolls; assorted colors (see individual directions).
2. Six-strand embroidery floss for features (colors in individual directions).
3. Knitting worsted for hair, about 1/2 oz. for each (colors in individual directions).
4. Sewing thread to match fabrics, felt, and yarns.
5. Red crayon or rouge for coloring cheeks.
6. Cotton batting for stuffmg.
7. All-purpose glue.
8. Additional materials in individual directions.

GENERAL DIRECTIONS:
1. Enlarge patterns on 1"squares; complete half and quarter-patterns indicated by long dash lines. Short dash lines indicate folds; dotted lines indicate stitching.
2. When cutting out body and garment pieces, add 1/4" for seam and hem allowances on all edges unless otherwise indicated; do not, however, add allowance when cutting felt.
3. For each doll, cut two head-body pieces and four separate legs (reversing pattern for two legs) of pink fabric.
4. Using carbon, transfer features to one head. With two strands of floss in needle, embroider features. Use outline stitch for eyebrows, some mouths, and to outline eyes. Fill in eyes and some mouths in satin stitch (shading on pattern indicates direction of stitches).
5. Color girls'cheeks with rouge or crayon.
6. Place head-body pieces together with right sides facing; pin and sew, leaving bottom open.
7. For each leg, sew two together in same manner, leaving top ends open. Clip all curves.
8. Turn all pieces to right side. Stuff arms first then stitch along dotted lines to close. Stuff head-body and each leg fully.
9. Turn in bottom edges of body and sew closed.
10. Turn in top edges of leg and sew to body, with leg seams centered.
