WOODEN NATIVITY SCENE

You will need:
Materials:
1. Pine wood - 1/2 inch, lO x 36 inches, 1/4 inch, 4 inch square, 1 inch, 4 x 12 inches
2. Acrylic paint - butter pecan, harvest gold, bayberry, slate blue, coffee bean, skintone, tapioca, southern pine & licorice
3. No. 6 flat paintbrush
4. No. 10/0 liner brush
5. Stencil
6. 1 inch sponge
7. Palette knife
8. Brown antiquing medium
9. Satin finish waterbase varnish
10. Scroll saw
11. Wood glue

Miscellaneous Items:
Tracing paper, transfer paper, stylus, fine sandpaper, paper towels, newspapers and a container of water.

Instructions:
1. Trace the patterns and use a stylus and transfer paper to transfer the star pattern to the 1/4 inch wood and the remaining patterns ( Mary, Joseph, Jesus, large tree, small tree, arch to the 1/2 inch wood. Note: To make a complete pattern, transfer the first half to tracing paper. Then flip the half pattern over carefully aligning it with the original at the center line and trace the second half.
2. Set 1 x 4 x l2 inch piece of wood aside for base.
3. Use the scroll saw to cut out pieces. Sand edges
4. Using the No. 6 brush, paint the front surfaces only on the people.
5. Paint Mary's clothes with bayberry and her face and hands with skintone.

6. Paint Joseph's clothes with slate blue, his beard and headband with coffee bean, and his face and hands with skintone.
7. Paint baby Jesus'cradle with coffee bean, his blanket with tapioca, and his face with skintone.
8. Let dry and use the liner brush and licorice to paint the outlines on all figures
9. Using the sponge brush, paint surfaces only on the remaining pieces.
10. Paint the manger arch with butter pecan, the trees with southern pine, and the star with harvest gold. Let dry.
11. Sand painted surfaces, sanding heavily on edges.
12. Mix antiquing medium with a small amount of water and use the sponge brush to apply to all sides of pieces, including the base.
13. Rub off excess antiquing with paper towels; let dry several hours.
14. To apply speckling to the front surfaces of all pieces, load the stencil brush with licorice.
15. Hold the brush toward the surface and pull the palette knife across the bristles toward yourself. Let dry.
16. Using the sponge brush apply a coat of varnish to all surfaces, except the bottom of each piece. Let dry and apply a second coat.
17. Using wood glue, glue the star to the top front of the manger arch. Refer to the Placement Guide to position and glue pieces on base.
