Materials: Knitting worsted, 1 oz. brown for each. Set of dp needles No. 5. Scraps of red, yellow, black, brown, gold, beige and white felt All-purpose glue Cotton batting Stitch holder Five 12" pipe cleaners for rooster, one for hen Yarn needle ROOSTER: Body: Beg at neck edge, cast on 24 sts; divide on 3 dp needles. Join; work in stockinette st (k each rnd) for 18 rnds. Rnd 19: (K 2 tog, k 6) 3 times-21 sts. Shape Tail: Rnd 20: K 7, k 2 tog, k 10, k 2 tog-19 sts. Rnd 26: K 2 tog, k t, k 2 tog, k 2— 5 sts. Cut yarn, leaving 8" end; thread yarn needle. Draw up sts; fasten securely. Head and Neck: Working with 2 dp needles, cast on 3 sts. Work back and forth in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 2 rows. Row 3: K, inc 1 st each side-5 sts. Row 4: Purl. Row 5: Repeat row 3-7 sts. Row 6: Purl across, cast on 5 sts at end of row-12 sts. Row 7: K across, cast on 5 sts at end of row-17 sts. Divide sts on 3 dp 12 sts. Shape Head: Next Rnd: K 3, sl next 6 sts on a holder. With 2 needles, work back and forth on remaining 6 sts for 6 rows. Sl sts from holder to dp needle. Divide 12 sts on 3 dp needles. Mark for beg of rnd. Join; k 2 rnds. Next Rnd: Inc 1 st in first st, k 3, inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts, k 5, inc 1 st in last st-16 sts. K 2 rnds. Next Rnd: (K 2, k 2 tog) 4 times-12 sts. Next Rnd: K 2 tog around-6 sts. Cut yarn; run end through sts; fasten securely. Wings (make 2): Note: Any changes for hen are in parentheses. Beg at tip of wing, cast on 6 sts; divide on 3 dp needles. Join; mark end of rnd. Work in stockinette st for 3 rnds. Next Rnd: Inc 1 st in next st, k 1, repeat from around-9 sts. K 4 (2) rnds. Next Rnd: Inc 1 st, k 2, repeat from 1: around-12 sts. K 3 (2) rnds. Next Rnd: * Inc 1 st, k 3, repeat from * around-15 sts. K 2 (1) rnds. Next Rnd: * Inc 1 st, k 4, repeat from * around-18 sts. K 2 (1) rnds. Next Rnd: * Inc 1 st, k 5, repeat from * around-21 sts. K 3 rnds. Next Rnd: * K 2 tog, k 1, repeat from * around-14 sts. K 1 rnd. Next Rnd: K 2 tog around-7 sts. Cut yarn; run end through sts; fasten securely. Upper Leg (make 2): Working with 2 dp needles, cast on 7 sts. Work back and forth in stockinette st for 4 rows. Next Row: (K 1, k 2 tog) twice, k 1 —5 sts. P 1 row. Next Row: K 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog-3 sts. Cut yarn; run end through sts; fasten. Finishing: Rooster is stuffed and sewn, with leg wires inserted thus: bend pipe cleaner into U shape and insert in body with ends sticking out for legs. Finish stuffing body having pipe cleaner in center of stuffing. For wings, sew one dec edge to body. Sew knitted upper legs in place on body over pipe cleaner, seaming side and stuffing as you sew. Note: Complete half-pats indicated by dash lines. From yellow felt, cut 2 leg and foot pieces as one; cut two separate bottom foot pieces cutting out at dotted lines. Cut pipe cleaner legs to extend 2" from upper leg. Glue on felt legs as for duck. From pattern, cut red felt comb and wattle, yellow beak; glue or sew in place as shown. Cut two small black circles, two small beige ovals for eyes; glue in place. Tail: Insert two pipe cleaners through tail; fold each cleaner in half, then fold up to form four tail feathers. Cut two 7 1/2" lengths of cleaner; insert in tail same way. Cut different colored felt strips, 1" wide and same length as cleaners; glue cleaner to center of felt, then fold felt in half and glue tog. Fringe edges of felt, cut end to a point. Adjust tail feathers. HEN: Body: Beg at neck edge, cast on 30 sts; divide on 3 dp needles. Join; work in stockinette st (k each rnd) for 16 rnds. Shape Tail: Rnd 17: (K 2 tog, k 3) 6 times-24 sts. K 1 rnd. Rnd 19: (K 2 tog, k 6) 3 times-21 sts. K 1 rnd. Rnd 21: (K 2 tog, k 5) 3 times-18 sts. Rnd 22: (K 2 tog, k 4) 3 times-15 sts. Rnd 23: (K 2 tog, k 3) 3 times-12 sts. Rnd 24: (K 2 tog, k 2) 3 times-9 sts. Rnd 25: K 2 tog, k 1) 3 times-6 sts. Cut yarn, leaving 8" end; thread yarn needle. Draw up sts; fasten securely. Head and Neck: Work as for rooster until 15 sts remain, then work 3 rnds instead of 5 rnds. Complete as for rooster. Wings (make 2): Work as for rooster; any changes for hen are in parentheses. Upper Leg (make 2): Working with 2 dp needles, cast on 10 sts. Work back and forth in stockinette st for 4 rows. Next Row: K 2 tog across-5 sts. P 1 row. Next Row: K 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog-3 sts. Run yarn through sts, fasten securely. Finishing: Complete as for rooster, using hen patterns. For legs, cut pipe cleaner legs to extend 1 1/2" from upper leg. Tail: Cut brown felt tails; glue on. |
