There are many theories as to the origin of hanging stockings by the fireplace on Christmas Eve for Santa Claus to fill.
I'm sure everybody knows about that wonderful poem by Clement Clarke Moore "Twas the Night Before Christmas"
where the stockings are hung by the chimney with care. It was written in 1822 and it has now become a tradition in many families to read the poem on Christmas Eve.
