Materials:
Backing fabric 45" wide, 3/4 yard
Muslin 36" wide, 1/2 yard
Scraps of several laces

Instructions:
Draw lines across stocking pattern, connecting grid lines.
Enlarge pattern by copying on paper ruled in 1" squares.
With dressmaker's carbon and dry ball-point pen, transfer pattern onto muslin.
Baste over stocking outline, to mark pattern on reverse side.

General Directions:
Patches:
Patches: Trace actual-size patterns A and B; glue to cardboard. Let glue dry, then cut on lines drawn for templates.
To cut patches, place templates on fabric, A templates on wrong side, B templates on right side, with one straight edge on straight grain of fabric.
Using a sharp pencil held at an outward angle, mark around templates.
Mark all pieces desired of one fabric, leaving 1/2" between outlines.
When all pieces are marked, cut out each one 1/4 beyond marked lines for seam allowance; marked lines will be seamlines.

Piecing:
Join cut pieces for fan patchwork, making fans in quarter-circle, one-third circle, or half-circle shapes as directed; see diagrams. For quarter-circle fan, cut square piece from muslin in size specified, for inner backing.
Mark two guidelines on muslin 1/4 from edge, one along left side, one along bottom.
Set compass for size specified. Placing point of compass in lower left corner where guidelines intersect, mark arc on muslin.
As a further guide, use protractor to mark four equally spaced points on arc, measuring again from intersecting lines, to make five 18 degree segments.
To start piecing, place an A piece right side up at bottom of muslin piece, matching a straight edge with muslin edge and outer curve with marked arc; baste in place 1/4" from bottom edge.
Place an A piece of another fabric over first, right sides facing, and stitch along upper seamline through all three layers; continue seam to first point marked on arc.
Turn second A to right side and press well.
Add a third A to second in same manner, then fourth and fifth A pieces, continuing seams to marked points.
The outer raw edge of the fifth A should align with raw edge of muslin; baste in place.
Baste B piece to muslin in lower left corner, matching outer raw edges and overlapping inner curve of A section with curve of B; machine-applique curve in place.

Embroidery:
Using a variety of contrasting threads and decorative stitches, machine-embroider over each seamline as shown in picture.
Trim away excess muslin along curved raw edge of fan.

Stockings:
Read General Directions and prepare templates.
Cut 19 A and three B of assorted fabrics.
Make one quarter-circle fan: Cut muslin piece 44," square. Mark guidelines as directed.
Set compass for 4" radius and mark arc.
Piece five A pieces as directed; applique B and trim away excess at sides to match muslin.
Embroider fan and trim muslin as directed; set aside.
Make two one-third circle fans: Cut two pieces muslin 6" square. On each, mark guidelines 1 1/2" from left and bottom edge.
Set compass for 4 " radius and mark arc from intersection of guidelines.
Mark points on arc as for quarter-circle.
Piece seven A pieces, placing first and last outside each guideline as shown in diagram: To begin, mark upper seamline of first A piece on right side of fabric and match with bottom guideline; baste in place.
Continue, adding A's as for quarter-circle fan. Applique B, embroider, and trim away excess muslin all around.
Pin the one-third circle fans to muslin, over toe and heel outline, allowing at least 1/4" outside line.
Pin quarter. circle fan about halfway up stocking leg.
Referring to picture, cut squares, triangles, rectangles, and other straight-edge shapes from fabric scraps.
Fit and stitch pieces together to make strips about 1 1/2" to 3" wide, trimming edges as necessary; press seams to one side.
Pin strips over stocking outline, arranging them around fans for a pleasing mix of fabrics and shapes.
Trim edges again to fit, then stitch strips to muslin as for fans, stitching, turning, and pressing; as you work, insert lace in some seams as desired.
Leave toe and heel fans free until rest of stocking is covered, then machine-applique in place.
Work machine embroidery over seams as desired; topstitch lace over curved edges of fans.
Turn muslin to wrong side. Cut out stocking 1/4" beyond basting.
Use pattern to cut three stockings from backing fabric, adding 1/4" seam allowance all around.
From same fabric, cut 2" x 5" strip for hanging loop and two 2 3/4" x 14" strips for cuff.
With right sides together, baste straight edge of lace to one 14" edge of a cuff piece.
Fold each cuff piece in half widthwise, wrong side out, and stitch ends together with a 1/4" seam, making two rings; press seams open.
Place cuff pieces one inside the other, right sides facing, and stitch along edge with lace, making 1/4" seam; turn cuff to right side and press.
Double-fold strip for hanging loop lengthwise; topstitch close to both edges.
Right sides facing, stitch stocking back to front, leaving top edge open; do not turn.
Slip cuff inside stocking, matching raw edges and side seams; baste around top of stocking.
Baste ends of loop to cuff at side seam.
Stitch lining pieces together, leaving top edge free and an opening for turning.
With stocking and lining still wrong side out, place top edges together, right sides facing, and stitch around with 1/2" seam.
Trim seam; clip curves.
Turn both to right side and slip-stitch lining closed.
Insert lining into stocking.
Tack cuff in place at seam.
